So I just had an unfortunate incident. When teaching the wife to trailer the boat the boat was not quite lined up and the hull scraped the trailer. The boat is fiberglass. There are now a few gouges on the bottom at the bow keel area. What would be best for repairing this? I am new to the hull repair thing. Not very familiar with fiberglass but learning. Is there an epoxy to use to fill the gouges? Do I need to use fiberglass to fill it? None of the gouges have punctured the hull that I see.

I presume what YD is talking about is the fact that Gelcoat is difficult to color match. White is not necessarily white. If you want to get an exact match to your hull color then adding tint and fussing with the formula is required. It's almost an art form and YD is one of our resident experts on gelcoat. lf you're not totally fussy about an exact match then you will probably be able to get reasonably close and since it's below the water line it's not going to be that much of an issue. At least it wouldn't be for me, You can usually call the MFG to get the color codes for the gelcoat to get the proper tints etc. if you really want to try and match it but if your boat has some years on it the sun and water will have faded it so that matching it even with the tint codes will still be difficult.

It's your boat and your call.

YD, do you have more to add? As life has it I have yet to get to this issue yet. So more input is appreciated. I am not too worried about matching the color due to it being below the water line. The boat is a TD Penny. A small manufacturer from Georgia that is no longer in business. Your expertise is desired.

Well .. I would suggest Why these nails gouges happened in those locations when trailering your boat first off.. Fix the bunks ?

If your not too worried about the color match then any gel will do.

Its just deep scratch and gouges. Sand out what you can with some 220. Prep and Fill the Gouges with some gelpaste ( mix gel with cabosil ).

You can sand and buff your filler .. or you can spray gel after you Sanded smooth your repair area. Which would require you to sand and buff out your gelcoat spray.

YD.
