First off, I know nothing about GPS units. (I've never owned one, never used one, never seen one in use.)

I just received a Garmin Nuvi 750 as a gift which is an automotive GPS unit. Does anyone know if this unit will work on lakes? I realize it wouldnt show contour but does it at least show your relative location on the lake? Are there contour lake maps available that would work with this unit?

Again, I really know nothing about GPS units and would appreciate any helpful info you can provide about this unit with regards to using on the water. (I have not even taken it out of the box yet.)

Thanks

Re: GPS - Garmin Nuvi 750 - Lake Maps?

I just looked into the maps for my Nuvi 200 last night and found out it is not compatible with lake maps. From what I gather, none of the Nuvi models are compatible with lake maps.

Here is a LINK to their site, which sells all kinds of add ons but, I am afraid you are in the same boat as I when it comes to the lake maps.

BTW, make sure you register your Nuvi and down load the updates.

Re: GPS - Garmin Nuvi 750 - Lake Maps?

Just my luck... Oh well I really don't have a great need for it on the water anyway. It would just be nice to have another use for it since I don't plan on using it on a daily basis just to go back and forth to work and running errands around town.

By the way what would happen if you did take the GPS on the water. Would there be an usable function? Such as using if you got lost? What does the screen look like if you drive a car over a bridge? Does it show water on each side?

Thanks

On the Nuvi, bodies of water are just blue globs. There is no indication as to where you are on the body of water, just inside the glob.

However, it will still register your speed and direction of travel.

So if you marked the boat ramp as a point, could you use it to navigate back to the ramp if you got lost?

Not real sure how the 700 series works but, mine has to have an address. I suppose if you had the address to a marina it might work. I have not tried it, so I can't really say yes or no.

In the menu system there is a place to set the unit to off road use. For navigating off road the unit will accept coordinates

Re: GPS - Garmin Nuvi 750 - Lake Maps?

I have two marine GPS units a Garmin GPSMAP 76 and a
Lowrance IFinder H2O C.
I also pickup a Garmin Nuvi 750 just before thankgiving and have use it around town.

The Garmin Nuvi 750 will accept Latitude and Longitude Points and it has routes You can set up so you should be able to use it on the water to navagate to a location and back to the ramp.

I have went to a address in the moutains that has no real address by puting in latitude and longitude. While the unit did not know the street name of the house it did take me right to it. First by mapping a route on the roads it new and for the last point all I had was direction and range which would work fine on the water. It could not tell me to turn on dirt road to the left in 50 feet. House just has a PO Box.

As best as I can tell the Auto units do not use WAAS error correction so I would not expect it to be closer than 30 to 50 feet.

Not all the Garmin nuvi have route capibility but the 750 does. On the unit you can hit "Where am I" and the unit will display Latitude and longitude and elevation. I have not tried this yet but the book says you can hit your car icon and it will save your location.

I forgot to tell you the first thing I would do is update to latest firmware. I think it was 4.20 as it corrects a few problems. Also you can download the latest map in the first 60 days for free. I guess this is just in insure it you got a unit that has been sitting in the wherehouse for a long time you can download the current map. It Says free For 60 days from the first day the unit locked on to satellites.
