Anyone currently using a Lowrance LMS-520c? My neighbor bought a boat and he decided to sell the boat and upgrade to a newer, larger boat. Well beforehand he purchased this particular GPS/Radar/Fishfinder and is willing to sell it to me for my 19' Searay. Of course I really don't need the Sonar portion but having it is always a plus while out to sea in the event inclement weather comes in. The Fishfinder part will come in handy by far greater.

What are your takes on this model and if anyone currently uses one just like it could you provide some feedback please?

The LMS-520C is discontinued Chart plotter/ sonar combo. It does not support radar.

Oh ha ha sorry I meant he was selling it to me so I can put it on my 19' Searay. My question about it being out dates it's only 7 years old so I see spending $500 or more for something to be obsolete in 5-7 years kind of stinks. Well I can get this unit for less then half that of a new one so I was contemplating. Just curious if anyone uses one still or had experience with one could tell me if they were satisfied at the time.

It says Sonar so that's for fish finder only? It also came with a small round lowrance radar looking device!

The recreational marine market is highly unstable mostly because of the demands of the consumers. While GPS and sonar technology has not changed much in the past 8-10 years, recreational marine consumers are demanding more and more "gadgets" on the units. They want their fish finder to be able to post cool underwater pictures on the internet and they want their chartplotter to double as on-board gaming device. It's all about keeping up with consumer demand and manufacturers are all to happy to oblige, to the betterment of their bottom lines.

Unlike the recreational market, commercial marine electronics platforms are pretty stable. Mainly because people don't buy Furuno and Simrad equipment for the bells and whistles. They buy with the expectation the unit will perform it's appointed task for the next 10-15 years.

BTW: that small round looking disk is your remote GPS antenna. Make sure it works. They are notorious for going bad and replacing one isn't cheap

Maybe I will just find another unit....I'm not one for all the bells and whistles though and seems stupid to have all that posting to Internet and what not when you on a boat it's like secluding yourself from society. So I disagree and I almost want to post that sign on my boat that "cell phones are not welcome so please secure them before underway!".

Something along those lines lol but then again most people can't live without them and use it as a photo device too.

There is a thread on here where one asked about taking friends on a boat ride only to find them glued to their phone and never paying attention to the boat ride. "Irritating"
