GARMIN - HUMMINGBIRD - All the big name brands are good units, it all depends on what you can afford...do some research, get what you will use,not just bell's & whistles.

Re: GPS Recommendation

i use a Garmin 60csx, it does everything you mention but talking to you. This is a unit built for outdoors (boating, marine, topo) with road functions on it. With that what I mean it has most of the road functions but not all. I also have a Quest which is the other way around. Is a road unit that can also do the outdoors but does not have all the outdoors nice stuff you might need. Garmin has a new series named Colorado which is very promising, but as far as I know it does not have voice prompt.
I had a little problem adapting from the Quest to the 60csx since I was so use to look at the GPS only when it talk to me. Then I learn to use the stats page better. I pay special attention to the "next turn" distance and I seldom miss any turn. Actually, I miss less turn than when I had the Quest and a very chatty passenger....

What every you choose, make sure you get it from a seller that will let you return it if it is not what you need. Also, a lot of retailers will charge a restocking fee on GPS. Way too many people that can't afford them buy the for a trip and then return them.

Good luck.

Re: GPS Recommendation

I use a Garmin 276C. After adding the road vehicle package it does all of those things, but only talks to me in the car. I have been using it for about 5 years, I think. I use a backup card, and DVDs for Inland Recreational Lakes and City Navigator to preprogram it for specific trips. It does everything I ask, and well.

There are later models with the same capabilities and enhanced features.

Go to the Garmin website to compare features of current models.

Re: GPS Recommendation

I thought the 276c could not talk. Sounds like a great option. The only think I dont like is the lithium battery. Since I use mine in my lease and while hiking/camping I like the option of installing a fresh new pair of batteries instead of having to charge the unit. However, for boating and automotive it looks like the ticket!

Re: GPS Recommendation

The voice comes with the vehicle package.

When my battery is fully charged I get several hours in the woods without degradation. Never went dead on me except once when I stored it for several months without use.
