I'm looking for a handheld GPS mainly to get an accurate speed reading. I guess I could use it for larger lakes (since I don't have a sense of direction anyhow). I have found a few for around 100 bucks but they dont specify weather they calculate speed or not. I guess I am going to have to take a trip to a sporting store to find this out, UNLESS...some of you may already hold in your hand the answer to my question.

I use the Lowrance H20. I've been impressed with it so far and yes, it does speed.

GPS for lake water use...... look for a FLOATING unit. Garmin has some floaters.

Re: GPS Speed

I think they all measure speed. It kinda has too in order to keep your possition triangulated. Im not 100 percent sure but i thought they all did it. I know that they all measure speed, they have too in order to work. The question is do they all show the speed on the display screen. But like was said above i also have never seen a unit that did not calculate speed. Some friends of mine do that geocashing thing and its like a group of people with handheld units and i went one time to check it out and out of the group of people there they all had handhelds of all different kinds and all of them calculated speed.

Although you can get a cheap unit that does that, why not get an unit with the maps? Garmin had a unit not too long ago with topo maps and it was 199.00. I think you can benefict from the maps as they show the lakes too, not bouy information though... I have a Garmin 60CSx, but that is a bit more and can surelly do more than show the speed.

They calculate speed from position...not the other way around. They look for position changes and calculate the time it took to change positions. With time and distance they calculate speed.
