Well, after trying to search and find the correct gear case oil to use I give up. I know it should be a hi-viscosity grade of about 90 but need to know exactly what I need, brand name and tiltle. Way too many choices when I do searches and I am new to boats so I am a bit confused. Where to buy it would be helpful also.

thanks, Roy

Back in the day, the OMC folks made an oil called Hi-Vis for their lower units. It's still around. They now produce a premium gear oil called HPF XR. It's a superior oil, made for today's high tech gears. You can run either. The Bombardier Premium Blend is not for your gearcase-electric shift gearcases only. Don't be confused by the automotive 90 weight gear oil. It's generally not rated for use in a marine environment.

Thanks, no way I could have found that on my own. Hope to get my oil changed in the next couple of weeks.

The HPF-XR was discontinued a couple of years ago and the HPF-Pro is recommended for all mechanical shift Evinrude and Johnson outboards.

I still find it amazing how we all buy a new or new-to-us used boat/motor/trailer and then want to know the absolute best 2-cycle oil, best lower foot gear oil, and best grease for trailer bearings to use. We actually want the "Best" for such things and seriously, any oils or grease meeting the standard requirements for such equipment will suffice without any issues IF you maintain the equipment at regular scheduled intervals. And as that newness wears off, some boats/motor/trailers will be lucky to get any type of normal service after that. Any 2-cycle oil meeting the BIA specification will work all day long for any engine using such, as well as lower foot oils too, and trailer bearing greases. So if the product you are looking at specifies that it does meet or exceeds those BIA specs...buy and use them with confidence... Not one person can prove or disprove one product superior to any other...but we all have our "BEST" types all the same.

I don't have to have the best but just the correct grade of oil to use. I am new to boats and little confused of what the correct type to use is and I don't even know what BIA specs are but I may learn the longer I have my boat. Do you have another suggestion of a type of oil to use for my boat motor?

thanks

I never thought there was much difference in gear oil. However, for your Johnny-Rude, I can tell you what NOT to use. The Pennzoil Marine Gear Oil (Yellow Bottle) from Wally World did not work for me at all. This stuff FOAMED like crazy in my gearcase. Stuff looked like Honey Mustard salad dressing (or yellow baby poop) I switched to the synthetic gear oil from Johnson and I never had another issue.

would an automotive grade 90w cause the elec shift to stick in forward? Mine tends to stick in forward from time to time, generally at the most inopportune times.

If you have a 1978 115 you do not have an Electric or more correctly, Hydro-electric shift. These were discontinued after 1972. In 1973 OMC brought out a Hydro-mechanical shft. By the late 1970s these were discontinued too and the case were straight mechanical.
If yours is a Hydro-mech I believe HPF-Pro is the stuff, Hydro-electric, Premium Blend
As mentioned before Automotive gear oils are not recommended, they do not have as much Extreme Pressure and anti foaming additves as the Marine gear oils.

I just bought some gear case oil at the Yamaha shop, Yamaha Marine lube HD. They said they use this for all their boat motors. If my motor runs ok i will try and and get the HPF-XR Pro later.

Thanks, will give it a try next week. Know what kind of spline grease to use for the propeller shaft?

What do you have on hand?

If your Yamaha dealer is close by, use their products with confidence.

Your local auto parts store will likely stock marine trailer wheel bearing grease (blue is best). That will work well for nearly all of your grease needs.

Edit - The Yamaha blue all purpose marine grease is only $7 a tube. Use it as noted above.
