Just a general question here folks. A guy i met told me to stay away from Grady white. newer boats after 87. He said that water went right through the gel coat and the boats were sinking at the dock. Is this possible? Sounds like a bunch of crap to me.

Re: grady white boats

I never have been a big fan of Grady Whites myself. I've always considered them to be a grossly overpriced boat, myself. But what that guy said was plain and simply wrong. Gradys are, in fact, very well built boats that do now, and always have, used the best of materials and components. There may have been some problems in the past with exposed wood leading to premature stringer and particularly transom rot, but nothing at all wrong with their gel coat or their layup schedule.

Thom

never had the chance to own one yet, but from everything i've heard and read, simply the best production small offshore boat made. only a few small, custom companies match their fit and finish. and you do pay for it.

Re: grady white boats

Got 2 of them right now. Both vintage Grady's. I just picked up a 20' Gulfstream that I intend to retrofit with a bracket and outboard. These boats are designed for offshore. They are solid, hand lay-up. You don't want anything less for offshore. As an earlier post was saying, if anything these early walk-arounds were overbuilt. Lot cheaper to retro an older one in great shape than buy a new one. Can't image Grady's filling with water at the dock. In this day and age, you don't stay in business building garbage. I always see lots of them at the ramp in Oregon Inlet, NC heading out. This is not a place for the faint of heart as far as navigating a narrow swift moving inlet. My money and confidence sticks with Grady's.

All the Grady's are sinking at the dock?????

I bought a '93 Gulfstream 2 years ago and the boat hasn't aged a day. The later models have the Sea V2 hull which is supposed to cut through the chop much better than the older hull. First time I heard anything derrogatory about a Grady outside of it's price.

I bought a '78 20' Gulfstream last year. Rebulit the engine and outdrive myself. These are great boats! I have never heard a bad word about Grady's....except for their price tag!

Re: grady white boats

I JUST FINISHED RE FITTING MY 1990 204 C.. I WENT THRU THIS BOAT AND RE DID THE FUEL TANK, THRU HULLS, YOU NAME IT . EVERYWHERE I WORKED BELOW AND ABOVE THE DECK IS BUILT SUPER TUFF.. THE BOAT RIDES THRU CHOP LIKE ITS NOT THERE... I LOVE MY GRADY AND HOPE TO KEEP IT FOR MANY YEARS NOW ITS GOOD AS NEW AND HAS NEW POWER (HONDA 225)..... I HAVE ABOUT HALF IN IT AS A NEW ONE WOULD COST.. AND I DO BELIVE THE NEWER 208 MODEL IS NOT AS HEAVILY BUILT AS THE 204 C .. BUT IT STILL BEATS MOST OTHER PRODUCTION BOATS. MY ONLY COMPLAINT IS THAT MY BOAT HAS A GOOD NUMBER OF GEL COAT FINE CRACKS AT STRESS POINTS.... BUT THAT IS JUST COSMETIC....ANYONE WHO WOULD RUN DOWN A GRADY DOES SO BECAUSE THEY DONT HAVE ONE IMO !!!!! LOL.
