Grass Seed Question

During my spring power clean of the garage I found my missing 20# bag of grass seed.My question is if I spread the seed over the weak part (side and back) will there be enough cover (thatch) to insure growth? We mulch cut mostly.

My other thought was to wait until late fall and allow the snow pack to press them in a bit with some thatch from the last few cuts.

Thanx in advance for your help.

Re: Grass Seed Question

If it's rye it should take quick. Depends on the seed.

Call your wife, take the bag of seed in your right hand, hold it straight in front of you and say, "here Honey, why don't you do it?"
Ok, maybe a bad strategy unless you have a REALLY comfortable couch....

I've always had good luck just raking really well with a leaf rake to scarify and dethatch the area..spreading the seed.....reverse the rake and lay it almost flat at a low angle and gently ""sweep" the area to settle the seed, then water well.
If it is not one of the high end, high maintenance grasses it should take well.

Re: Grass Seed Question

If you can rake it in and keep it moist for a couple of weeks, it will take off and do just fine.

Re: Grass Seed Question

The best time to plant grass seed is early fall; up here in Oregon (by the way grows more grass seed than any other state in the union) is the last two weeks of September.

The second best time is early spring; April to May?? looks like you had better ?Get-her-Done?
