I have a new 2003 merc. 25 hp. I bent the prop on a rock but was was moving very slow so the skeg and everything else is fine, not ever sctatched. When I changed the prop I noticed a thumb size glob of grease on the bottom below the prop shaft. I changed the gear oil and nothing was wrong . Could this have been the result of over greasing the shaft of is something wrong ?? thanks m_s

Re: grease in lower unit

if you bought your engine from a reputable dealer, part of the pre delivery inspection was to grease the prop to ensure it will come back off, this should be done everytime you change props, do a water pump and 20/50/100 services, usually the servicing dealer will do it for you as part of the service you pay for, but doenst hurt to do it yourself every few months to ensure it will come off, use a quality marine grease that will not break dowwn in water.

good luck with your new engine

I didn't notice it when I changed props earlier in the year. Could this be the result of something else?? thanks

i can only state that in my experience, the grease is from the shop, the l/u has oil in it, nothing else to lubricate it, just the oil

good luck

The seals that are on the propshaft will have had grease put in them when installed. When you bent the shaft the grease was pushed out and possbily some oil.

With this said...I am assuming that it is grease. It could be of course from an overich condition while operating the engine.

TMD

Erm..oops..read your post wrong...thought it was prop shaft...not prop..sorry.

Is there a chance that you troll quite a bit?

TMD

Re: grease in lower unit

The grease as you call it will be fuel and carbon mixed that has run down the exhaust...and exits out the prop area.

To alleviate this problem...run at high speed more often.

TMD

That makes sense - now that you mention it. When I was fishing on big waters, and ran at high speeds it wasn't there. Now that I'm on smaller waters trolling , it appeared.-- Hay thanks for the info. I really appreciate the help. M_S
