I'm putting back together my Nissan NS40C outboard after installing new impeller. I have the factory service manual. The manual says to use "recommended engine oil" on the splines of the lower unit input shaft when reassembling.
I used wheel bearing grease instead, like I would on my motorcycle.Of course I read the manual afterwards. There was no evidence of grease on the splines when I removed the unit. Did I screw up? Also, when I removed the prop nut it was not tight. Prop was able to wiggle on the splined shaft. Can't find anything in the manual about torque specs for prop nut. And the manual states to use Nissan grease on the prop shaft splines when reasembling. I'm confused.

I use waterproof grease on mine and crank the nut down handtight, then I back it off 1/4 turn. That lets the prop slide backwards and forward just a tiny bit every time the motor is put in reverse or forward. This may not be the recommended way to do it but I have never worn out any splines and I have never had a stuck prop either.

Be careful and don't get grease on the end of the drive shaft, just the splines.

c/6

Hooty

I would go with Walker & Hooty advise they are 100% correct. The Grease on top of the spline shaft creates to much downward thrust on the lower unit. Oil will just keep it from seezing up for later pump replacements. Walker is correct on the prop nut. I've always have done mine that way and never had a problem in over 30 years.

.......................
IF It's Broke Fix It.
