[mods: meant to put this in the "Boat Topics and Questions (not engine topics)" section, please move if appropriate]

Hopefuly this will be a little less volatile than the oil questions, lol.

'89 4.3L Cobra. The service manual specifies, for different applications, OMC Triple-Guard Grease and OMC Marine Wheel Bearing grease. Are there equivalents that you would recommend that would be available from somewhere other than a marina or boating supplies store? For example, I have some grade 2 white marine grease on hand. Would this be ok to use instead of the marine wheel bearing grease, or not heavy duty/ water resistant enough?

What about a substitute for OMC triple guard grease? I assume greases have some rating system, but no idea what it is. (for example, I've got some 'Slick 50 One Grease' that has a NLGI Grade #2 and 'exceeds' requirements for NLGI Service Class GC-LB, whatever that means).

Similar question w.r.t. OMC Ultra Lock and OMC Nut Lock. I'd guess there are more common products I could use (some type of Loc Tight, etc?), just not sure exactly what.

One last question: OMC Gasket Sealing Compound. I've got some 3M 847 Rubber Gasket Adhesive in the basement. I'm guessing 'gasket adhesive' might be different from 'gasket sealing compound'. If so, any idea as an acceptable substitute for the OMC product?

Not adverse to the OMC products, but if I've already got something that would work as well, I'd hate to buy additional items. If I need to buy something else, a Wal Mart or an auto parts store would be much more convenient than a marina or boating parts store (as long as they carried something equivalent, don't want to risk performance to save a few quid).

Thanks for any informed feedback.
