1974 Mercruiser MC1 165. I was installing my new gimbal bearing. Before installing I lined up the space in the tolerance ring with the hole in the outer race. I don't recall seeing if the hole in the outer race lined up with the hole in the bearing, I'm hoping it was, because its brand new. I installed the new bearing until it bottomed out, lined up the space in the tolerance ring with grease hole in the gimbal housing. I started greasing the fitting and noticed the grease was flowing between the bearing outer race and the gimbal housing. I was expecting to see grease coming out between bearing and the outer race. I only pumped it a few times and stopped because it seemed like all the grease was coming out and not going in. What did I do wrong?
Thanks!

You have to make sure the hole in the outer race is lined up with the grease feed hole otherwise it will burn up quick. With my 165 that means pulling bearing back out and reinstalling. Pain yes, better than the alternatives. Hopefully with all the grease around the bearing it will come out easily, of course once you get the tolerance ring out. In my change over last year I ended up breaking and than digging out that darn ring.

I believe its a sierra gimbal bearing, it came with a kit I got. Should I go with a Merc bearing?
