Greasing the Gimbal Bearing

I have a 89 Mercruiser 4.3L with Alpha I. I replaced the gimbal bearing. How do I know if the grease hole is lined up. I pump grease into the zerk fitting and I see the grease coming out around the outside of the bearing. Is that normal?

The only way to know for sure is if you installed it and had the mark in the proper location shown in the manual, and that the wavy ring around the outside of the gimbal bearing was in the right place. Then you will get grease coming out from the inner race also. Pump a little, turn the gimbal bearing pump some more, and do this till all the old grease is gone. Then clean up the old grease and put the drive back on.
