Today I got a very nice suprise from my boss. He calls me in his office and tells me he loves the job I am doing and to show his appreciation gives me a rather hefty raise. I never mentioned anything tohim or anyone here about wanting or needing more money. Ihave only worked here for a few months and I love it.... has anyone had an experiance like this??? Do tell..... it strengthens my belief that there are still employers who appreciate all of our hard work

Re: Great jobs... who has one??

Fishhunter911,well let's put it like this. I went to school in Feb. for a job at CSX Railroad spent about $8,000 dollars on the school expenses and keeping up with bills while in school. And now they have already cut jobs to the point that I cannot hold one so now I am looking for work. I can hold a job within my seniority district about a hundred miles away after I spend my own time qualifying and not getting paid for it for about three weeks.   Consider yourself very fortunate!!! ;) <br /><br />TAZ

Hey fishhunter, thats great. If more employers treated their employies that way I believe many of them would have alot more success. I work as a youth leader at a youth group/center and dont get payed much (barely keeps up with my expenses) but when I get to see a troubled teen start to get their life together, well I cant put a price on it.

As an employer, it is hard to find good help nowadays and when one does, they do what they can to keep them. :) <br /><br />Sounds like you might have a smart boss. <br /><br />Keep up the good work.

I had the same experiance except I work for a govt contractor except when they came to the money they said they wanted to make a bigger profit this year so no one is getting raises and I should be happy that they gave me 1% more for the extra effort I put in.<br /><br />they don't have any paid benefits insurance is 800 a month. The gov't automaticaly gives them a 3% raise on the contract each year on which they allready had a 40% profit margin for doing nothing other than siging a paycheck because they outbid my former employer. for the contract.<br /><br />You seem to be lucky. I'm just waiting till around January when the economy starts looking better and I'll be leaving here. I do like the job just not the new employer.

I work at AR Children's Hospital in surgery research. Finding new ways to help babies get well. If your child is healthy, thank the Lord.<br />So many sick babies out there, it's definitely not about money, guys. I see moms and dads who would give every last penny just to see their child smile. The reward is the ones who smile at you.

Doing something for someone else to make their life easier and happier is always a great reward. That is why I volunteer for the Red Cross and my local Fire Department. Its just nice to know you are needed and wanted where you actually get paid. Congrats to those who make a difference in someones elses life!!

I like my current job, the pay could be better, but I have a job! The working conditions and envirment are great. Raise whats that? Well I do have a job, with all the layoffs etc. I should be happy right? someone got layed off last week that had been here for more than 15 years, I've been here 5 years.<br />Richard

Problem with raises is, that if you're not on the train, gettin' that little extra on a regular basis, you find yourself WAY below the average after a few years and you'll be unable to get back on level - without getting a new job.<br /><br />If the employer won't pay you your worth, he is running his business for YOUR money, so to speak.<br /><br />Not that this makes the problem

any easier.... you just have to be aware of it and keep your eyes open.

Re: Great jobs... who has one??

My boss and I are both happy... He's not afraid to say "hey, great work" or "this won't cut it" and neither of us are afraid to admit were wrong which is fine by me... Everythings out in the open and my opinion on the job at hand is valued.. <br /><br />Working conditions are generally poor (hot, greasy, wet, and just plain ol' dirty) but that comes with the territory... Knew that going in so no supprise... Some boats are better than others when it comes to clean engine rooms and bilge areas... Some are down right disgusting.. Changing out a macerator pump for the head (thats a toilet, for you landlubbers :D ), YUCK!.. $h!tty job, but hey, somebodys gotta do it! :p <br /><br />My other job, well thats a different story... It's kind of like Mellow says "my boss is an idiot!"<br />I'm self employed... :D Very true!<br /><br />Why am I not at work? Short day.. Hit a dead end with a leaking steering cylinder while bleeding the hydraulic system, so had to pull the it out and have the cylinder rebuilt.. Nothing else to do.. Raining anyway..

Been on both sides of the fence - hired and being hired. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but any boss with any sense at all is going to reward the workers that bring him value. Unfortunately, when unions step in and insist that everyone get the same compensation, takes the drive and desire to do your best and the ability for owners to reward workers who are valuable. May make some upset here, but would never want to be in a union shop.
