Ineresting read, great story I would find it tough to believe if not for all the great pictures. Anyway after reading it I felt sorry for the Captain and crew but after thinking about it I think maybe the Captain was an idiot. A 50 foot charter boat surely has radar? How do you hit something that big even in the dark and if it even had one single light on it what was he doing that close? I would have a lot of questions to ask this guy if I was his insurance carrier.

Holy Cra*...what a story. This thing needs to get around a bit. Took forever to download! Man, there was excitement from every angle.

Loved the helo buzzin the Mexs. That was classic.

Good for the USCG.
Those men encounter a whole hell of a lot more than we ever know.

And Hey Mike, the read said the buoys or poles as well as the purse seiner were not properly marked or illuminated. Sounds like the seiners were at fault in this.

Been out in that area a bunch of times on sportboats and we always joke about fishing the bluefin pens. Guess someone finally got to try it out :D

At least it was a bluefin pen they hit... 2 years ago a sportboat hit a shipping container (diesel truck sized) and it split the hull. The CG (might have been Navy?) lifted everyone off the boat and the crew limped the boat over to Mexico to patch it up.

Neither of us have heard both sides of the story but I'm just saying, I run at night every now and then and I take it slow enough that If I come upon an unlit buoy or floating object I usually see it. I have no radar this guy did and you know there were at least some lights on the thing because the writer used the words that the boat and pen were not properly illuminated by the rules of the road. That to me sir sounds like a cop out.

I have a brother in law who runs a comercial crab boat out of Tampa Bay. Last year his 45 foot crab boat was run over by a 90' steel hull shrimp boat while sitting still with all his lights on. The accident report showed that the Shrimp boat skipper had left the autopilot on and gone below to fix a cup of coffee. I wouldn't doubt if something similar happend here. How could you hit something that big and not even see it until after the crash? My bet is nobody was at the helm or was asleep at the helm. 12 knots is not that fast.
