I was out to Victoria, V.C.Island earlier this spring, Salmon charter out of the inner harbour. We were headed back in. Just before you enter the Marina you have to go through a narrow area between the Sea Wall and a rocky arm which projects out into the water about 300', at the end of the arm there is a rock probably 300sqft. that projects up about 20', as there is a narrow waterway between the rock and the arm, DOT has a marker mounted on the rock. As we make the turn into the marina, here comes a guy on a 45' Sailboat, under power, Vee drive of some sort. Yup he is headed between the rock and the shore, we are all waving and hollering at the guy, he is sitting at his helm, with his feet up on top of his cabin, the Hatchway is open, music is blasting loud enough for us to hear it 60-75' away, and he waves back at us! All of a sudden the boat leaps up in the air, turns sharp to port, motor dies and we can hear the alarms over the music.
I asked the Charter Capt. if we should help, his reply was not printable, but it came down to Green light to Green marker.

regardless of whether the guy made a mistake it is always your responsibility to go aid a boat in distress. At least stop and ask it he needs help. Sounds like he was relying on his depth finder and his keel hit before the finder could ring an alarm. He was probably fine, but you need to find out anyway.

I am never surprised at how some people act.

That's the trouble when you book a charter through a Broker, you don't get an idea of the Capt's. character. This guy was quite a character! He had another charter after me, didn't want to be late!

The alarm's we could hear, would have been more than his depth sounder, I would have to guess some were from the engine stalling, and some from the keel hitting?
Even after we docked, the charter Capt. never said anything to anyone around us. Of course all the others there were C.C's., and I didn't notice a lot of camaraderie.

Re: Green to Green?

We had only been boating for a couple of months when we had to rescue a guy and his small son in their jon boat...both the outboard and the trolling motor were dead. We had just gotten out of the creek mouth into the river when we saw him with a single paddle trying to get back to the boat ramp in the creek. We towed them in. Sure hope someone helps us if we ever get in trouble! :)
