Just got back from Greenwood Lake,SC where my Lovely and I were looking for a lakeside house to retire to. Can anybody comment on the lake and the area. How's the fishing? What Species? Does the lake get overcrowded in the summer. I know its a drawdown lake but the property we looked at has a pier with 3 boats floating and room for a couple more. Looks like I can float year round. Any comments pro and con would be greatly appreciated. :) Thanks.

I've been in the upstate for 5 yers. Personally we are looking at Hartwell and Keowee. I am not a big fan of Greenwood. From the local news thay have had algae issues. Here is a good site I found for hartwell and Keowee.
http://www.lakekeowee.com/land.html
If you are not familir with the area. Hartwell is huge. Keowee is above hartwell and the most beautiful lake I have ever been on. Clean Clear water and mountain views. BUT the lots are a little more and the drop off from the bank can be steep. Good luck.

I just realized you are from NY. Greenwood is as redneck as they come. I highly encourage you to look at Hartwell or Keowee. Keowee also has more retirement type communities. Please post any other questions you may have about the area and I will try to answer. I moved from IL. It has been the best thing we ever did. Nice weather and low cost of living.

Thanks BB,
I did notice a strong redneck influence but being from Upstate NY it's not a whole lot different from home. The water quality is an issue I need to explore. We need to be in the 160's range and I just don't see that being available at Hartwell. Am I missing something? Also I sense that Greenwood is booming and I think taht the trailers and shacks will eliminate themselves as the economy steps up. I kinda feel like we may be getting in on the beginning of a revival for the area. I don't mean to ask for advice and then just contradict your views. I'm just trying to flesh out the whole picture. Any more thoughts are welcome and appreciated.

Hey,

What is the matter with the "redneck" thing?

Some of the best people I know are rednecks.

Not knocking rednecks. Hell I'm one myself. Just trying to give a heads up. I have run into some hatred of yankee's etc. In a 40 mile stretch down SC25 to Greenwood, SC there are over 50 confederate flags.
160's? You would have to look pretty hard at hartwell. Buy a fixer upper. The lake lots I'm looking at are 80k or so and that's just for the dirt. From an economic standpoint Greenwood is pretty **** poor IMO. They have Fuji, Velux and Cooper tool down there. Have not seen much of a boom at all in Greenwood nor do I anticipate one. They have a crappy communications infrastructure and in all honesty it's not perceived as a very desirable place to live in SC. Hartwell being off 85 and half way between Atlanta and Charlotte is far more desirable. The 85 corridor is booming. Supposed to get a new Auto research center that will allegedly bring 20,000 jobs. Might be worth you time to explore Hartwell. It has some killer stripper fishing too.

Please buy some lakefront property on Lake Greenwood!!!

I just moved to Greenwood and have yet to fish or boat, and I could really use a good launch point!

If you need any local info, I will try to help, but I am new here.

I find NO problems with the infrastructure or communications. I have 67 cable channels and DSL internet access. Greenwood is quickly becoming a nice area. It is small, I come from the North Hills of Pittsburgh, and much of this area reminds me of the north Hills 20 years ago (when 100 acres was $20,000 now it's $1,000,000). Rednecks don't worry me too much, I'm a biker so I think thats close enough for them. I work for Eaton Corp. the 4th largest employer in the city. There is a lot of unemployment due to the NAFTA deal and all of the textile mills moving to Mexico. If I was going to start a business in manufacturing or the like, this would be a perfect place, lots of employable people and many existing factories available. I find most of the lake area to be "hand-me-down" generational property and the locals don't realize its value.

Thanks Doc. I don't dnecessarily disagree with Beer Barge but you seem to support the conclusions I came to. I've also gone to some sites that do relative comparisons on various cities and Greenwood stacks up quite nicely. Like I said earlier being from upstate NY I may seem a little redneck to some folks so that doesn't really bother me. I think we see the same things regarding the properties on some parts of the lake and I believe as the money moves in the trailers will go away and be replaced by nicer homes. Good for us. The property we are trying to buy(we've already decided to do it) does include an improved launch and a pier with six slips and yes I'd be more than happy to meet you and go fishing. Where are you in Greenwood?

I live in a small housing plan just to the north of the bypass, near the airport called Winding Creek. I'm only about 10 miles from the lake, less if I go by back roads. I have a 15' Starcraft Kingfisher that I just got titled in SC. I am currently painting the trailer.
