Hi all. I just joined the forums after researching and buying my first boat. I'm sure I will have questions aplenty later on, but I just wanted to get familiar with the goings on around here and describe the package I just bought.

My rig is a 1981 Viking V-1660 16' boat. It's held up on land by a 1990 Venture trailer and pushed around in the water by what I think is a classic 115 Mercury 6 cyl. More on that later. I paid $2000.00 for the rig and it is in great shape! We towed it strait from the notary to Lake Clark in York County, PA. We put in and ran like a million bucks for about 7 hours. Overall it's about 90%. The hull has a little chalk, but there is still shine underneath. The mechanicals are sound. The dash mounted speedo and tach do not work, but I will make them work in short order. The motor fires right off when primed. The primer bulb was in crappy shape and gave me trouble once. I replaced it after bringing the boat back on land. The upholstery is in great shape. There are a few cracks, but no tears. It's been stored indoors during the season, but outdoor and covered in the winter. It came with everything needed to run it right away. It also came with a ski tower/tube tower. I am not sure about what it's really meant for, but I will ask that question later.

I am super unclear as to what we have going on with the motor type, and I am quite confused as to what it is. When I looked under the highrise hood, I could swear it said it was a 3cyl engine, but it certainly has 6 new plugs. I'm sure I can get some decent information from the folks here. I will take some pictures of it today as well as getting the numbers off the motor for accurate identification.

I can find nothing on Viking boats (small ones) from the 80's. Can someone give me some background or point me in the right direction? Either they were very rare, or not very good. Considering that Viking makes and has made yachts for a long time, I can't imagine that they were bad boats.

Anyhow...It's nice to be here and I have already gotten a great amount of information by just browsing. I hope I am welcome and hope to meet some folk in my area to hang around with.

Welcome aboard.
If you have not done so yet, can I suggest you and your co-captain take a boating safety course.
If your engine has 6 plugs in a line, that is what is considered a Tower Of Power inline 6 cylinder.
Had a 115 Mercury and also a 115 Mariner and never had any trouble out of either.
Again, welcome aboard.

First off, thanks for the welcome!! This place is an excellent resource.

We have signed up for a boater safety course to get my first mate the basics. I have boated before, but my first mate has not. I'm a former Navy man as well. The previous owner also gave us all of the materials that she got when she took her boater safety course and the first mate has been brushing up on the materials.

Here are a couple of pics of the rig. I had a bad evening with her tonight. I'll detail that in the proper forum.
