Yesterday with Valentines dinner cooking three 1 1/4 inch thick ribeyes , Almost had them done when I noticed the red glow from the porch . Damn , I thought I killed the steaks ... Not at all , The grill was on fire and melting. Grabbed the steaks (now 1/2 inch hockey pucks) and the grill was in flames like 2 feet high , fire extinguisher was to no avail as the metal was on fire in a bright white flame . Turned the tank off and grabbed it while it was still burning just watching the molten red glow just above my arm , Very scarey!! Finally got it out with baking soda and snow to cool the metal.

Come to find out the grill has been recalled . I never got any notice. It is a Perfect Flame 2 lid 4 burner grill sold only at Lowes . They sold over 24,000 of these and if you have one click on the link below for recall info . I will post back how this was resolved once it is .

UPDATE ! I just did some more research , over 600,000 Prefect Flame grills have been recalled if you own any model stop using it and contact Lowes !

Wow - glad to hear no one was hurt and Kudos to you for fast action to avoid further damage. Makes me wonder what metal alloy they used that would support that kind of flame. I had never thought of a burner malfunction that would melt and ignite the metal. Obviously, it can and does happen.

Thanks for the heads up! Gives us all a chance to think about safety and ask "what would we do if ......?"

UPDATE : Lowes is giving full refund for the grill , We are just working out how to get it there as it will not fit in my Jeep assembled. I have attached 3 pics one from the front / top , 2 from the back. All the white piles are melted metal. In the back views you can see the melted metal on the drip plate ( the only reason I was able to get the tank out ) And the location of the tank , You can see the on/off hanging down .

I would take them the photos, demand the refund and tell them if they want it back come and get it.

At the very least, Lowes should give you one of thier rental trucks for an hour or two, given the situation I doubt the manger would even bat an eye at a free afternoon rental.

Ok here is how Lowes handled it . I was told it would be $59.95 to pick up the grill . I was pissed department manager confirmed the price .. asked for the store manager and he was at lunch at 11am and would not be back until 1 or so . I called back at 1:30 and the store manager was on another line and I left a message with the details and told them I wanted to resolve this at the store level. Got a call back from the department manager and he told me if I bought another grill from them they would deliver for free and pick up ... The only reason I did this is the fact that my wife works at that store (we never told them).. We went in today to buy the new grill , Department manager still being an ***** and we will not get our refund until they get the grill back on Monday ... Had to put the new one on the credit card !!!! Can you say HOME DEPOT people ?

That is crazy about the grill melting like that. What kind of metal burns at such a low temp?

I'm puzzled as to why you are pissed at Lowes, as they just sell the stuff. Would you blame a dealership for selling a Toyota before the recall? Call the maker of the grill and be pissed at them for not paying Lowes to pick up the grills, if you feel the need to lash out.

I agree lowkee.

Another thing related, this is the reason to fill out the little registration cards you get with products, then you will be notified of recalls before your burn your house down.

Certainly don't want to create any enemies with you blokes, but I'm a bit dazed by some peoples attitude here.
A lot of things go wrong in this world, and I wonder if someone should be congratulating the manufacturer for recalling the product and giving a 100% refund, instead of having a bun fight as to who's responsibility and cost it is to collect the item.

Having just finished reading the thread on 'who logs into uboats while at work' i sort of wonder who is complaining in their bosses time. Ironic eh!, then someone will probably say 'probably made in China', and I wonder why?

Kend303. Yep, bit of a difficult one....no doubt about that....but you may just have to bight the bullet on this one, and be really thankful it turned out with as few consequences as it did.
I'm thinking luck is really on your side.
Real hard to do sometimes, but the big picture may be the most important one here.

Metals burning. I'm pretty ignorant on this one, but don't the early M113's (Armoured Personal Carriers) burn rather well, with a nice low blue flame all over, buckle the doors and hatches tight and cook everyone inside.
I heard it was the magnesium added to the alloy. I think HMS Sheffield did the same, right to the water line.

Cheers
Phillip

Psssst!! Ken....reckon you should go buy a lottery ticket....I would!

Re: Grill Fire / RECALL

First of all I just got a call from the Consumer Safety Board . They confirmed this grill was designed by Lowes and specified by Lowes for construction. You could only buy this MODEL at Lowes . I called the manufacturer first and they told me due to this Lowes was 100% responsiable for the recall .
lowkee .. I am a service manager at a car dealrship , I know how recalls work and know how to take care of the customer the first time . I gave Lowes many chances to do the right thing and they dropped the ball . The metal in question could be magnesium , Has a low flash point and can't be put out with conventional fire fighting means . Spent an 10 ABC extinguisher on the fire first and no change .. that is when I went for the tank .
skargo .. registered online and mailed the card in .. see my history with recalls in this post . NEVER got a notice as well as Lowes having my current address on file .

HOW IN THE NAME OF GOD AM I BEING TURNED INTO THE BAD GUY

Complaining on the internet is the way to go. Maybe you'll get lucky and a Lowes guy will be here on iboats and will help you.

Re: Grill Fire / RECALL

Well mistakes happen. There have been a number of items I never received via the postal system.

There are layer's of blame here from the manufacturer.... to Lowes and even who "should" have been the responsible party to ensure the recall was properly executed.

Regardless...... the grill is dead :( however everyone involved are still alive ;)

We can all hash out the facts and what "should" have happened but it will get us nothing in return.

I think it is time to shut this down before it get's ugly (uglier).
