I was about to clean out all the grinding dust in my shop vac when it dawned on me.... This stuff looks a lot like milled fibers. Has anyone ever used the dust after substantial grinding to make PB or just to thicken resin a little. I know it isn't the "preferred" method because the dust isn't nearly as clean as true milled fibers. Just wondering is anyone else has done this?

Not so much in place of the fibers but I remember seeing one post where it was used (in a pinch) as a thickener in place of Cabosil.

I don't know how recommended the practice is but I'm sure the pros will weigh in on that.

I have done that to thicken up the resin on verticals before and no adverse effects. After all it's fiberglass dust anyway.

Usually not recommended due to other contaminates in the mix. As was stated can and has been used "In a Pinch" but usually not Best Practice.

It can be used and a few companies do, but its hard to generate enough dust to do much. The other issue is that once the dust is mixed with resin it will start to gel, not quickly, but you can't keep it around very long.

Really ?? A Few Boat manufactures use Shop Vacuumed up grind glass for fillers ??

Can ya tell me one that does that method..or are you bound by some kind of privacy thingy..

PS. Not one production boat company pulls out shop vac grind glass and mixed it with resin for fillets on a production level...

I wouldn't want to use that for ANYTHING. Besides the ground up glass there's going to be powdered resin, powdered residue from your sanding disc, and who knows what else. This wouldn't be as strong as true milled fibers, wouldn't sand as well as micro, and wouldn't work the same as cabosil for thickening.

Pretty Strong Statement. Got any "FACTS" to back it up. Seeing that ondarvr is a Factory Rep and vistits these MFG's on a regular basis, I'm kinda thinkin he might have some insight into this more than You or I. But then again "Facts" always tell the tale.

I stand by this statement..there are no production level companies that open up shop vacs and start mixing the dust in a production level boat...

I would think that if you allowed Ondarvr to speak for himself..he would suggest against this method ( even if his post was not quite clear on a " YES " or " NO " answer ) .. he would probably say "NO" ..for a number of reasons .. This is Fact ..

Fact .. grind dust is not Milled fiber..

Fact .. you may be able to mix a little bit of grind dust out of your Shop Vac to create a thickened solution..for what application we dont know yet..

I dont want to spar.. I want the solution to the problem..why is such a thing even suggested..for what application ?? Are you going to grind and start mixing your shop vac deposits with your resin for bulkhead fillets ? Or stringer fillets ??

Just a simple question can be turned into a debate that now has sparked Another Flame thread.. .. sigh.. no need for that..

What is the Application...thats All you need to know.

Not a Wide Brush being spread around here lately that seems to bring up discord and de-solution..

Ok..the OP asked in a pinch can you put shop vac material in with your resin to complete the job ..lets say ..

Yup..sure can..depending on the application :) ..

But not for production boats..Fact ..

Peace all ..

Why does this picture come to my mind?
