grinding forward gear

Has anyone had luck using a dremel tool or the like to fix their forward gear. My 1975 25hp evinrude was jumping out of gear. I had no real adjustment to make, so I took apart the lower unit and found that the forward gear is worn where the dog clutch mates with it. I have read in other posts of using a dremel to resurface the gear, but I have not read any success stories. Does it work or should I just take it to a machine shop, or get a new one. What would the cheapest be?

Thanks

Re: grinding forward gear

You can find out what a new dog and gear would cost on Shop.Evinrude.com and then get a price from a machine shop. If the gear is bad so is the shift dog. When it's all said and done you better check all your shift linkage for any slop or worn parts.

id leave the dremel alone, those machined surfaced are pretty tight tolerances. go buy what u need.

If your dog is worn go get a new one, they aren't that much and I doubt it would still work after you ground it, if the material is already missing and you take more off it just isn't going to work adn may actually cause more damage.

Poke around on Ebay or do a Google, there should be plenty of options, Napa also sells outboard parts and may have what you need.
