I've seen a few different options...what works the fastest and lasts the longest? I seem to recall Oops (maybe it was someone else) finally found a solid 4 1/2" grinding wheel that looked incredible (said it would have reduced his grinding time by a third) What should i purchase for my upcoming stringer job.....

Quick-loc by 3m will do you fine..

Those flappers will goto waste in no time at the least opportune time :)

YD.

PS. or just get the 24g disks that have the arbor/nut .. they will cost less..but have your gloves ripping everytime you change them..

Depends on what your doing....I use a diamond blade in a 4 1/2 " angle grinder for cutting out old decks and stringers and a grinding wheel 36 grit for grinding fiberglass to do lay up

Re: Grinding wheel for fiberglass?

I concur with YD, the fiber reinforced sanding discs are the cats meow when it comes to ripping through fiberglass without ripping thru multiple flappers.

The problem with flappers is they wear out relatively fast as far as the initial sanding aspect goes ( meaning you can feel the loss of traction/cut ) You have to wear away cardboard to get to the next strip of grit underneath, which means they cut great when new, but they are much slower when you've started to have to wear thru the cardboard to get at some fresh grit, which means you also have less surface area of grit that you are actually using. They DO work, but you need to understand HOW they work to get the most out of them and your session. One advantage though is you don't have a sharp edge that you could burn through the glass with once they've been used...nice rounded edge which is great for feathering if you are new to grinding glass.

The fiber reinforced discs are on a semi rigid backer which are going to be less forgiving, but better than a stone wheel.

The stone wheel has the advantage of not being able to accidentally tear if you get into something you shouldn't, like a staple. I briefly used the wheel, but thought it to be more tedious than either the flapper or the disc.

:rolleyes:Use a grinding wheel for aluminum. It won't fill up like one used for ferrious metals.I use a7 inch . Napa auto stocks them. I know you will like it. I don't mean the wheel is made of alum. It is made for grinding aluminium.

Re: Grinding wheel for fiberglass?

Hi mcgyver.
For grinding I only ever use standard disc's, in the courser grits.
I find I can buy these disks very cheaply if bought in 50/100 boxes.
I have tried every new product in the last 30 years or so and still find the standard disk and rubber pad the most economical and fastest, (same thing to me) to use.
I change the disc's as soon as they slow their cutting power.
Check the net, you will find deals on the ordinary disks. Keep the box in the hull with you while you work and change them as often as you feel necessary.
As for cutting. My favourite is a Metal cutting disk, the very thin one. Again these can be bulk purchased, at a good price.
I keep diamond blades for cutting stainless etc.

Good luck.

Paul.

For some heavy duty grinding I have used a concrete grinding stone hooked up to a Mikita buffer. It will grind thru a boat in less than a minute. Careful....Good Luck!
