1975 Johnson 70hp SeaHorse (Model 70ESL75B)clicks (grinds)loudly when going into gear (forward most notible) Particularly as it revs up as you push the hammer forward. Seems to rev too fast before it gets into gear. It jumps in and out until it gets moving. Works perfect other than this.
How do you adjust this properly? I have a Manual on the way, but someone with experience would be helpful!!

harley,

There really isn't an adjustment-other than the cable.

The gear shifting needs to be done firmly and quickly. Do not ease it into gear.

If is truly jumping in and out of gear. Your clutch dog may be worn.

Also, make sure your cable (gearshift) is adjusted properly. It should throw the gearshift arm (under bottom carb) all the way forward. You can make that adjustment by rotating the barrel nut on the engine end of the cable.
