While rewiring my front nav lights, I discovered a ground wire connected to my fuel filler neck that went nowhere as what ever wire was connected before was pulled loose. What would the purpose of this wire be? The boat is a Sunbird Neptune 202 Walk around cuddy.

Hi Neptune
You are correct that is a ground wire. The fuel filler neck needs to be grounded along with the tank. This is to prevent a spark. I am not to good at explaining this kind of stuff. The basic idea is for fire prevention during fueling. It is important. Maybe we can get one of the other guys to do a better job for you. If not then check coast gaurd regs, and make proper repairs.

Neptune
Alcan is right. It is a ground and should run to the tank or engine block. When fuel flows thru a rubber hose it make static elctricity. Ground wire bleeds that off to prevent sparks and fire.
