I grew up in the 80s and we had it "tough".

Dear Kids of America:

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning uphill both ways through year 'round blizzards carrying their younger siblings on their backs to their one-room schoolhouse where they maintained a straight-A average despite their full-time after-school job at the local textile mill where they worked for 35 cents an hour just to help keep their family from starving to death!

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up there was no way I was going to lay a bunch of stuff like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it. But.... Now that I've reached the ripe old age of forty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! Compared to my childhood, you live in a freaking Utopia! And I hate to say it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it!

When I was a kid we didn't have The Internet -- we wanted to know something, we had to go to the library and look it up ourselves! And there was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter -- with a pen! --and then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there! And there were no MP3s or Napster! You wanted to steal music, you had to go to the record store and shoplift it yourself! Or we had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and mess it all up!

You want to hear about hardship? You couldn't just download porn! You had to bribe some homeless dude to buy you a copy of "Hustler" at the 7-11! Those were your options! We didn't have fancy stuff like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either. When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was. It could be your boss, your mom, a collections agent, you didn't know! You just had to pick it up and take your chances!

We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like "Space Invaders" and "Asteroids" and the graphics sucked! Your guy was a little square and in order to have any fun you had to rely on your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win, the game just kept on getting harder and faster until you died! When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the same height! A tall guy sat in front of you, you were out of luck. And sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 20 channels and there was no on screen menu! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! And there was no Cartoon Network! You could only get cartoons on Saturday morning. Did you hear what I said you lazy little freaks? We had to wait all week for cartoons! That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980! .....But I don't want to lecture you.

Yah, well we had one baseball bat and both teams used it, the two lefties never, ever played the field at the same time. And if ya had shoes ya could play without worrying about getting stung by the bees in the clover. To top that off my sister had to give up her dolls head before we could even pick teams. So there. :p :p

I miss the woman with the big hair. There isn't a feeling as good as the high (quite literlly) that you would get when she would hold you tight in that SUPER-HEAVY-MEGA-HARD AS STEEL-HOLD hairspray.

Someday I'll tell you about growing up in Northern New York in the 50's, talk about tough times, we were so poor we couldn't afford to pay attention,,,we thought that all clothes came from a store called, "Hand Me Down",,,,TV started at 4 PM, ended at 10 PM and was TWO channels from Montreal, one English and the other French so we didn't need the TV guide we couldn't afford,,, and on and on. :)

Don't even get me started on the life in the sticks.

I was kept in a fence during the day so mom would know where I was. No tv, wood cook stove. Eat before dark cause no lights.

Dad would set off fireworks for us on the 4th.
He used sticks of TNT. Man they were loud.

Had 2 rooms.
The kitchen/living room and the bedroom.
Water out of a barrel.
Naaa, kids nowadays don't know what rough is.

Me either TW. Had a box on top of the TV that you turned the knob and it would go "clunk..clunk...clunk" and spin the antenna around on the roof till the picture got better.

Re: Growing up in the 80's

hahahaah antennea spinners? man that s what dad used the kids for, someone would go rotate the antennea and someone else would holler better or worse from the window :) .
had no record stores even if we had been brave enough to attempt shoplifting.
for 10 years or so we never had a house key and the back door had no locks anyway.
we never lost car keys cause they were always in the ignition.
many times you would come home and the truck or "other" car was missing, usually there was a note on the table from the neighbor that borrowed it.
usually to get the tractor out of the barn or jump start something with the occasional I needed it to go get parts to fix my truck.
was no worries it always came back full of gas.
everybody had 2 or 3 ragged old cars, took that many to have a ride to work everyday.
one was always broke.
no one ever heard of safty inspections, if it propelled itself run it.
my sister got a cassete player recorder one christmas that if you could afford batteries was fun.
I was actually quite rich as a kid cause my dad had a junkyard and hauled scrap iron.
kept me from chunking melons at 20 cents an hour so much and I did not shuck/pick so many pecans at 10 cents a pound.
I stripped wiring from cars and burned the insulation off in a 55 gallon drum and got 45 cents a pound. also stripped the stainless trim off and got 55 cents a pound. aluminium, clean, was worth a blazing 25 cents a pound and 15 cents a pound dirty.
by the time I was 10 I could identify copper, aluminium, stainless and lead as well as tell ya the current market price :) #2 steel was worthless at 10 dollars a ton.
we got about 20 dollars for a junk car and maybe 25 if we burned the interior out first.
we also used them to burn our trash in for a week or two before hauling them to pinto island metals.
I really feel sorry for them city folks in the 80's and 90's :)

Re: Growing up in the 80's

Anybody ever get bored as a kid? I grew up thru the 50's and 60's. Never got bored. Always something to do.....Jailbreak in the alleys at night, building and riding bicycles during the day, fishing in what was then a cess pool of a river. Winter time was sled riding time and indoor games.....one Monopoly games would go for weeks. School never closed even during heavy snow falls. You just went a little later. Black and white TV....3 channels depending on which way the antenna was turned. Saturday morning was the best for TV.

Sell pop bottles for extra spending money...got 2 cents a piece for them. Sold junk too.

Good times back then. Can't complain. But times do change. And they always will.
