I started my 1984 5.7 Mercriuser yesterday from storage.. It fired right up and ran fine.. The problem I had was the same problem I had last year, at higher R.P.M's (2000 or so) I can hear a growling or ginding noise coming from the rear. It does it with the prop engaged or disanged in forward or reverse. I had all the u-joints replaced 3 years ago as they were shot. Now it made this same noise last year for the first time after de-wintersizing I took the vent plug for the sten drive off and could hear a pressure release, (same thing this year) I toped it off with new oil.. maybe 50c.c and it didnt make that noise again all summer. Last night I did the same but have yet to start it as I am changing engine oil and belts,. will try again tonight. any thoughts as to what this noise could be?? thanks in advance

It sounds like it might be your gimbal bearing.

Grease the bearing and change the drive oil...not just top it off..
The gimbal bearing,u-joints and upper gears all spin even if the boat is not in gear.
You want to change the gear lube to look for metal shavings...
