Grrr, y pipe blues!

Ok, so I bolted up my y pipe and dropped the engine in, finally. I was thinking over things and realized that the y pipe may not have actually been the correct y pipe. It had an extra hole, and my transom mount did not. In my infinite ignorance I bolted it up thinking it was cast to be used in several different applications. I'm second guessing that now. Anyone here have a similar experience that wants to clue me in on weather this will hold water? I'm guessing it will just pour out of the hole.

Howdy,

You did not indicate what you're running. I suppose it's a Mercruiser "something" since this is the Mercruiser forum........but people post OMC Stringer questions in here all the time!

If I remember correctly, a Bravo Y-pipe will go in an Alpha application and some will have an extra hole.......but your best bet is to post the exact model number of each and/or look it up at a Mercruiser parts site to be sure.

For example, I looked up at Michigan Motorz the current y-pipe I would install on my 1997 454 Bravo.

and found the following:

Item number: 807130A4

New MerCruiser exhaust Y-pipe assembly. Used on many MerCruiser V6, V8, Alpha, Bravo outdrives, sterndrives with 4.3 V4, 5.0, 5.7, 7.4, V8 262, V6, 305, 350, 454 CID motors with 7? 4-inch elbows.

Replaces part #'s 44266T, 44266T 1, 44266T1, 807130A 4, 807130A4

It's the same for MANY engines Alpha and Bravo......You're probably just fine!

Cheers,

Rick

The assembly doesn't have the little hole offset in the middle... I'm guessing its a 50/50 chance of it lining up with a flat surface.

It's been years since I saw my "Pre" Alpha transom mount. but I think that offset hole is a bolt hole. If the O-rings match and seal it won't leak.

The newer ones match up. I don't know at all about the early ones. I would probably be pulling the engine if no one jumps in here.

Your picture is for the older MC-1 drives (No such thing as a "Pre-Alpha" http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=528510&p=3594570&viewfull=1#post3594570

Some of the inline engines used a 3 bolt pattern, while the V8's used a 4 bolt pattern on the Y pipe. Supposedly you can use the 4 bolt pipe on a 3 bolt transom shield. I personally wouldn't trust it. Does yours leak?

That remains to be seen, my concern is that it will leak from the unused bolt hole. The passages on the pipe also look quite a bit smaller than on the assembly, is this becasue the y pipe was intended to be used with a v4 or v6? The hole pattern lines up perfect except that it has that 1 extra hole.

Fill the pipe with water and block off all the holes except the extra!

Ok, so in the interest of helping others with the same problem, i'll give you a quick breakdown of how this worked out for me. Pipe bolts up and appears to work out, until you go to mount the power steering assembly, you cant. If you ever plan to piece together a mercruiser you will quickly learn it is extremely frustrating, costly, and time consuming. I definitely don't recommend it.
