Does anyone own or have personal experience with a 1994 21' Grumman (riveted aluminum), built by Sea Nymph, deep V O/B boat? I'm looking at one.....open with walk-thru, very high freeboard. Seems very safe for my purposes (solo salmon fishing on Great Lakes). Boat was built in Sea Nymph plant (Indiana) who licensed the Grumman name. It has no leaks at present. Any feedback from someone who has owned one of these or has first-hand knowledge will be helpful. I am especially interested in durability and how well it steers in swells and wind.

Re: Grumman (Sea Nymph) 21'

I have a 19.5 foot Sea Nymph GLS that I'm restoring. I have fished salmon here in Lake Ontario and walleye in the lake near the St. Lawrence River out of the same boat that my broter in-law had. I liked the boat a lot so when I fond one worthy of restoration I tackled the job. I've seen guys with the 21 grumman and these are about identical in hull degree and deadrise, probably why grumman contracted to sea nymph. I really like this boat for many reasons, but trolling in a stiff wind is difficult in any boat unless your going with the wind, it will get turned around pretty easy if the helmsman is not on point. As for the freeboard it's a pretty dry ride in two to three foot waves, nasty four and fives you get a little spray over the windshield. I normally put te bimini top up and close up the bow when it's real nasty. All in all it's a great boat, easy to tow and launch.... I do mine solo. Things to look for are rotting plywood under the carpets, you can feel them when you stand and bounce a little fells spongy, can be replaced fairly easy but it will end up costing several hundred dollars doing it yourself.
Its a durable boat, I've restored a couple real eyesores and after that they're as good as new if not better. Good luck catch some big ones!

Re: Grumman (Sea Nymph) 21'

Thank you. That is very helpful. What year is your GLS? Is it riveted or welded? Your observations about trolling solo in the wind makes me laugh---sounds like me. When I have a 15# salmon on, it is everything I can do to keep the salmon at the stern when it is windy. And I appreciate the tip on the floors. I replaced all the plywood floors in my 18' Starcraft CC that I hope to replace with something that doesn't leak and has higher freeboard. I would really rather not replace floors again. The boat I'm looking at is O/B (120hp Johnson injection), has a full bimini with sides, so I should be able to stay dry in the rain and out of the sun. Please let me know the year and construction of your boat. Thank you again.
