Has anyone else had problems sealing the float bowls on an '89 GT150. What would be the fix. I just rebuilt my carbs. It runs good on the muffs, but now I've got two float bowls that are leaking. To tight? To loose?

Thanks,
Duck L.

Re: GT150 Float bowl leaks

Duck... I assume you did use a new carburetor kit with new gaskets and tightened the screws securely. Perhaps the float levels are slightly off?

(Carburetor Float Setting)

With the carburetor body held upside down, the float being viewed from the side, adjust the float so that the free end of the float (the end opposite the hinge pin) is ever so slightly higher (off level) than the other end. And when viewed from the end, make sure it is not cocked.

Re: GT150 Float bowl leaks

Thanks for the advise Joe,

I was very carefull to set the float height according to the book (OMC book) and used new kits.

I took it all back apart to look at the mating face of the float bowls. I put a straight edge on the bowls and the were all way out of flat. I put some 120 grit sandpaper on a 1/2" thick glass plate and lapped the plastic bowls flat.

I just put it back together and all looks good. Who thought plastic float bowls was a good idea?

I have one more question......... There is a silver/black fitting with a disc inside I think it is in the pulse hose (5/16" diameter?) from the VRO unit to the block. Is this suppossed to be a check valve? I can blow through mine with the same effort in each direction. Is this normal?

Thanks again,

Duck

PS
Thaks for the explanation of the recirc system. When I had my carbs off, I pulled them out to find them cruddy. I cleaned them with a brush and alcohol before I saw any hint of the filter sreen.

Re: GT150 Float bowl leaks

Duck..... That silver/black fitting you speak of is a flame arrestor. It's hard to believe but there are actually flames under pressure within the crankcase area occasionally. If not for that flame arrestor, the VRO would melt in time at the operating (pressure) fitting area. (Seen it happen).

Re: GT150 Float bowl leaks

Replace that black/silver pulse limiter (flame arrestor) ASAP with thelatest blue/silver one that came out in 1992. It has much improved protection for your fuel pump.

Re: GT150 Float bowl leaks

Hi Duck...

If your carbs are fitted with the black "plastic" bowls, the leaks your are experiencing are because the bowls are warped. The only solution to correctly "fix it" is to replace the bowls. The replacement bowls are cast aluminum. I know it sounds nuts and I could never figure it out either.

If this is your case, you will also need to replace the idle jets as the ones in the plastic bowl will not fit the aluminum bowl. Any Johnny/Rude dealer can help you out.

And Ditto Joe and seahorses suggestion on replacing the pulse limiter.

If I'm off track on the bowl issue, please let me know.

Thanks OBJ,

You're right on track about the black plastic float bowls. I lapped them back to flat with sandpaper on glass plate. I stopped them from dripping gas anyway.

Thanks
Duck L.
