Re: GT150 shift linkage disconnect

There are nice pictures and diagrams in the service manual. If your going to work on the motor yourself it will be the best tool you can buy.:)

Re: GT150 shift linkage disconnect

I will definately be getting one but... that bit of advice doesn't do me alot of good with the bolts loose on the foot.;)

Anyone else willing to help out?

Oh, I can't get my email notification to work. I've played with the settings but nothing works.

Re: GT150 shift linkage disconnect

I just purchased this boat knowing it hadn't been run in nearly 3 years. I've run it a few minutes hooked to a hose. I was hoping to get the new water pump in so I could do a water test this weekend.

That is my sad sad;) story. Someone just give me a hint.

Look under the bottom carb -- and then think to yourself, how in blue blazes am I supposed to get that disconnected!!!!!!!!! When you drop the leg, DO NOT turn the shift shaft as you will mess up the length adjustment.

I little 1/4 in drive ratchet with a swivel adapter and short extension.Go in from the port side of the motor and loosen the bolt until you can pull the shift rod down.A little electrical tape around the swivel adapter helps stiffen it up some....;)

Re: GT150 shift linkage disconnect

OK, let's assume I get the bolt loose. I can't even see the point at which the rod and bolt connect so how in the world do you reassemble it?

edit: I got a flashlight in there where I finally did see where the rod pivots and heads into the locking point. Does it disconnect at the pivot point or where it connects to the bolt area?

This is a 1990 GT 150 are they all the same setup?

Re: GT150 shift linkage disconnect

On mine i left the bolt screwed in with a couple threads still holding it in place. It was enough for the shift rod to drop out.Going back together was much better than i thought it would be.If i remember i put the shifter in full reverse or forward to raise the bolt up higher and it was easy to get to.
Should be just enough room below the cowling to grab the rod with some needle nose pliers to get it in place to go back together.

I loosened the bolt but the rod wouldn't drop out. I tried taking the bolt all the way out and still nothing. Should the rod drop right out? If not would you pry it out or what?

I also tried dropping the foot down but the rod still held it up.

It should drop out.Does yours have the shift rod that curves forward at the top? It should have a hole in the end that the bolt goes through.

Re: GT150 shift linkage disconnect

Ah, it's all making sense now. I was going from something I read somewhere else that must have been incorrect. It said to go from the starboard side. I took out the wrong bolt:mad:

It got to dark and cold to mess with it anymore today. The correct brass nut is even harder to get to:rolleyes:

What sizse is that bolt?

I think i ended up buying a short 7/16 socket to go on the swivel extension.I was wondering if you were on the right bolt....:)

I believe the 7/16 is right Gary. CBeam, you could always go to the BRP Literature web page to see the diagram for it, will help in the future. Of course, a manual is the best aid. Also heed Silvertips warning, dont try adjusting that shift rod, it may look loose but is set to that exact length for a reason.

Re: GT150 shift linkage disconnect

Thanks for all the help guys. The parts diagrams are great!

Would you indulge me one more question? How do you test the overheat sensor? I know the alarm horn works I just want to be sure the temp sensor functions.

thanks Chuck

Re: GT150 shift linkage disconnect

Unplug the wire from the sensor and ground it out to the engine, the alarm should sound...
There should be a rubber boot a few inches up the wire from the sensor with a butt connector in it...:)
