how much clearance should i mount these with? the ones i have are like a 5 foot long bunk that mounts to the trailer with two 1 x 1 angled aluminum brackets. i dont think they should be touching the boat when its on the trailer, is an inch or two clearance about right?

Ayuh,....

I built my own,+ have them lightly Clamping the boat, at the gunnels....
'course, mine are somewhat springy, because I wanted some clamping force to keep the boat centered.....

Re: guide ons

When I asked this ame question I was told anything from what Bond-o said to a couple inches wider than the boat. I set mine to have .5" clearance on either side and it has worked just fine.

i have a total of 1 inch clearance from the widest point on the boat. it has to go where you want it.
