I just inherited a 12' aluminum from my in-laws. Good news right? Wrong! The wood gunwales have rotted from being stored outside. Does anyone know where I can order replacements?

Well, I could do that but then I would find a way to screw it up. I would much rather buy it, receive it in the mail, and screw it right on. If this were a fancier project maybe, but I would rather spend my free time fishing...not building ;)

funkbandit,

I am doing precisely what you need to do on a tin boat my neighbor dragged home.

It's easy. We have glued strips of 1/2" plywood together. We cut them to the proper width and install them. We used plywood because it is stong, yet remains flexible enough to bend.

On to the transom we go! Same deal, just gluing 3 pieces of 1/2" ply together.

Glue does the trick? Just like Gorrilla Glue or something? Do you then tack them with some nails or screws?

I am not partial to wood gunwales.

I worked in two outdoor shops where we were able to order aftermarket wood, vinyl, or aluminum gunwales to fit canoes from Mad River Canoe to Wenonah. I just didn't know if maybe marine shops would have the same sort of suppliers.

Off the subject, but I am not going too much money on this boat and was looking to buy a MinnKota Endura 50. Should be plenty just tp get me around don't you think?

I'd call the local wood-workers club. See if someone would "help" you. Most of those guys would relish a chance to shine on a simple woodworking project like that one. You buy the material, lunch and beer. They probably would cut the wood and maybe even install it just for the fun of doing it. RichG
