This past Saturday my wife, her sister, and her husband went boating on Canandaigua lake in the finger lakes region Upstate New York. There is a very small island on the north end where a bunch of boaters anchor on to get out and swim.
Well, I was wading in shin deep water with my BIL just talking and enjoying the beautiful weather when a 20+ boat with a I/O trolls by us within about 15 feet. The guy waves to us and proceeds to dig his outdrive into the sand/gravel bar 15 feet from where we're standing in water around a foot deep. The guy takes his boat out of gear but leaves his outdrive down and begins to rock the boat as best as one person can rock a decent sized boat. After rocking it he puts it into gear and tries again, with the same results. He then takes it out of gear and gets into the water in his jeans and sneakers without saying a word to us.
He starts trying to push the boat, but again with the outdrive down buried in the sand/gravel the boat doesn't move. I suggest to him that he raises his outdrive and then the boat will float off the bar and he responds that he was told not to raise the outdrive with the motor running. So I suggest to shut off the motor and he gets this look on his face like he just discovered a cure for the common cold. He asked his lady friend to shut off the motor and to raise the outdrive. We didn't see him again as I assumed he was too ashamed to come back to the area.
I just could not believe he didn't think that maybe the water was shallow because I was standing in 1 foot deep water, duh!!

Was told not to raise his outdrive while running, but wasn't told to shut down the engine when you have a major problem?

Wonder how much mud/sand/gravel he sucked into his drive...

If that were me, I'd have jumped out and pretended I meant to do it. Hang out at the sand bar and wait for the tide to come in like everyone else. I just wouldn't have done it at speed or that close to where people are swimming.

If he waited for the tide to come in on the finger lakes, he'll be waiting a very long time.

Re: Guy beached his boat on sandbar I was standing on??

I did something like this once.

I was on an unfamiliar lake headed back to the campground and going through a narrow part of the lake. The chart/map I had showed that it was shallow along the North part of the this channel. Well there were several fishing boats in the area I knew was deep enough so I figured I would go around to the North of them. I was running about 25mph and watching the fish/depth finder really close. It went from 7ft to 2ft and then nothing within about 10 ft. I came to a stop in about knee deep water. I just shut it down and sat there for a minute to make it appear as though it was intentional. Then I calmly raised the outdrive and got in the water and pushed the boat back to the channel were it went from knee deep water to over my head in one step. Luckily I was able to just step onto the ladder as the boat went over the edge. Luckily it was very soft sand with no rocks or stumps.

I'm sure all those fishing in the area thought I was an idiot. However, if they weren't all crowded in the deep part of the channel I could have made it through without any trouble. I hope the fishing was good for them. For the record I was no closer than 300 yards to the nearest fisherman and probably twice that to shore on either side.

That's a pretty good story, stupidity is perfectly legal.

Some people will not admit that they are wrong no matter what happened. Then if they are asked if they need help then they will say "No I have it".
