I guess my day could have been much worse...
I headed out to sea, and was about 4 NM out and the seas were rough, really too rough for my 22' Stingray. I need to do a few mods to get my boat more rough seas compliant. So I cut my trip short and headed back into port to play around in the calm bay.
Darn good thing......as I entered the mouth of the bay, I felt a funny "thump" and now I have no power steering..... Uh-oh, not good, I am still 45 min no wake speed from my marina. The bay is busy, and I am right smack in the busy channel, so I limp on about 10 min and drop anchor for a quick inspection. I threw my serpantine belt resulting from a faulty p/s pulley. Crap. Ends up, the belt was still able to turn the water pump, as my engine temp never rose above 160F, the belt was actually riding on the p/s shaft, and still able to power the other engine pullies, so I said when the heck, fired the engine up, and the belt seems ok, so I limp all the way home. So $52 for a new pulley, and I will be back in shape.
Darn good thing I didn't blow the pulley out at sea, as I would have needed a tow !!!
P.S CHECK YOUR P/S PULLEY FOR CRACKS NEAR THE STEEL HUB, IF YOU HAVE THE PLASTIC SERPENTINE BELT DRIVE STYLE!!
