John,

Hate to keep pestering you. I tried to buy a parts book from the local OMC/BMCA dealer. He said, N/A.

Anyway, back to the "83" Rude-90. Mod.# E90TLCTE, Ser. # J027171. Ran it again today and I still have a pesky fuel leak under the bottom carb. I now know it's the plastic fitting that goes into the float bowl.

Questions?

1. Can I get this fitting (plastic or otherwise) and how does one get it out? Part #? The carb. kits I bought (went OMC) do not have anything that looks remotely related to these pieces.

2. Is it the same fitting for top and bottom carbs.? I might as well replace both.

3. Thermostats-# 3 and # 4 (cyl's) do not want to warm up-#2 and # 1 do OK after banging on the stat. housing. I suspect thermostat(s). It's been a long time since I've dived into a V-4 crossflow this deep. Can you remove the stat. housing without dropping the lower pan? I certainly hope so! Running cold is just as deadly as running hot-just slower.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

DJ-

The parts book may be n/a, I'll double check when I get to work Monday morning, do me a favor and "bump" this post to the top some time Monday morning, so i'll spot it and remember.

I need to know if you've got the early style or late style carbs - early has a one-piece all cast aluminum body, late has an alloy top which is held on by several screws. Also, the carb bowls, are the aluminum ones or a black plastic?

If nothing is corroded real bad you may be able to get at the t-stat housing but it ain't easy. I'm curious about your cylinder temps - How can the top 2 be ok and the bottom 2 be cold or do you have 1 bank cold and one bank ok?? i.e.:
2 - 1
4 - 3

-John

Hi Djohns19

Now i dont know the fitting your talking about, but i am working on another old Evin. the previour owner broke the plastic
tell tale fitting on the exhaust jacket, threads were corroded, and i thought id have to drill and recut threads. But I took my soldering gun ( right word ? ) And melted the piece of thread left in housing. It melted, and finale scrump. I could remove the rest vith a little screwdriver - Viola !! Hope you can use same method.

John,

Thanks. Will do.

These are cast AL carbs. with the bottoms being seperate cast AL also, held on by four screws-no plastic.
I noticed in the Clymer and the carb kits that they didn't fit the description-completely-of late or early. Sort of a hybrid. GREAT!! I think late model "83"s fell into sort of a black hole as far as publishing goes.

Sorry about the cylinder description (MAM-mid age moment)-you're right, the right bank (looking from rear-same side as tell-tale) is cold.

This engine, other than paint, is absolutely perfect. No corrosion to deal with. Any tips on getting those stat. housing bolts out would be greatly appreciated.

G DANE, Thanks for the tip. I was sort of thinking along the same lines. Although these fittings are not broken, just leaking. They are in the bottom of the carbs. Lots of fuel around, even when off the engine. Do not want to take any chances. Thanks again.

John,

I got the t-stat. housing off today, very tedious, just needed to loosen the lower pan.

Is there a t-stat kit? What does it include? Part #?

Also, if there is a part number for those bottom carb. fittings and a parts book part #, I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

DJ-

Good news/bad news:

Good news, parts catalog p/n 939587 ($11.50), still available, see your local parts guy & just give him the p/n.

Bad news, replacement parts for carb bowls are N/A. Upper bowl is p/n 391761, lower bowl is p/n 391755. Those p/n's supercede FROM 389857. The nipple fitting is p/n 391754, but its not a servicable item because its a press fit. Its probably leaking from someone soaking the bowl in too harsh a cleaner.

T-stat components are not available in a kit form (at least none that I'm aware of). You'll need to order basically 2 of every thing (except the cover gasket) I would recommend replacing the poppets, springs and diaphragms and seals all at the same time. No sense in having to pull it all apart too soon (LOL).

Hope this helps.

-John

BTW - If you end up needing to replace the carb bowls, check with Gary @ www.garysmarine.com - he's a good guy and will treat you well - I've done business w/him before.
