Over the years Merc has made many different controls... Which one do you have? (Post photo if you can).

Could it possibly be stuck due to corrosion? Not sure exactly what handle you are referring to...

That narrows it down to two, assuming it's panel mount.

We have the Commander 3000 classic

or the Commander 3000

Quicksilver and Commander are the same thing. Which one does it look like. Upper or lower picture.

If it doesn't look like either one, then post a picture like Chris mentioned.

Re: handle removal mercury controls

I had the other quicksilver controls and thought I had a short in the switch also...COme to find out the trim wires heading up to the switch were rubbing on the bolts used to install the entire throttle control, and eventually wore the insulation off...Guess the point I was trying to make was I tore my switch apart and didnt have to as it was under the throttle handle...Just something to check

thank you for the hint, I will check out the wires, some times it works then it will not, up is the problem down is ok trailer buttom works I tested the pump and it is ok. It has to be the switch (rocker) I am trying to get to it now the book said to pry the bottom out and the switch will com out, well here we go.
Thanks for all the help.I will let you know what it was. I hope.

For the top one, all you have to do is take a small screwdriver and pry out the Neutral only button. And inside you will find a bolt that holds the handle on for some reason 5/8th comes to mind....Real easy once you get that push button out.
