A short while back I posted a note about an incident years back on a failed raw water impeller. When I took off the cover it dumped pieces of impeller in my hand. Someone wrote in that these could become lodged in the cooling system. I remember at the time being concerned about the same thing, especially the thermostat. I pulled it off the thermostat and it was clear. I watched the temperature closely.
When rebuilding the engine I was installing the thermostat casing when I saw a little obstruction past the thermostat at the discharge where it necks down to enter the rubber hose to the exhaust. I pulled it out and sure enough it was a piece of the rubber impeller. Apparently it was not enough of a restriction to cause trouble because it ran another ten years that way.
Thanks for those kind of notes and the many other things I pick up on these forums.
Another point. I installed a new Mallory Marine water pump on my 302 Ford and found that the pulley was about 1/8 to 3/16 inch off. I pressed it on further and it is okay now. Just another thing to watch out for.
