I just bought a used 1989 50hp 2 cyl evinrude outboard. I have seen it started and idling. Compresson is about 120. It is being shipped to my house and will get here in a month. I am kinda regretting buying an Evinrude. Is onyone here happy with their late 80's Evinrude? What is your opinion on these things?

Thanks

c

I'm really happy with the two late '80s J/E motor I have. From what I've seen they are the easiest to work on, and just as dependable as any other brand. The Mercury motors are even harder to open the hood. Why are you worried about an Evinrude?

I'm happy with both of mine, easy to work on, and so far, very dependable, I don't think I'd want anything else but an Evinrude or Johnson, my neighbor has a late 80's 50 horse with almost no time on it at all, I wish I could talk him out of it, I don't have anything to use it on, but I'm sure I could find something:D

If you regret it so much just change the shipping addrerss to mine and I will recieve it for you and make sure you never have to see it!!:)

Serious rudes and johnsons are some of the most dependable out there, and parts are reasonable compared to other manufactures.

How many 30 and 40 year old engines from other manufactures you see still in use??

Buyer's remorse is a normal thing, Cheeko.

If I were looking for a 50 from that period I would consider nothing but a JohnnyRude.

I have an 87 and 88 Evinrude 50.Other than premature failure of the starter brush assembly on the 88 (fixed by me at the dock)have had no problems
out of the ordinary in 20 years of operation.

I have an '87 Johnson 50 hp.

Been a great motor--no problems other than the self induced variety

Re: Happy with your evinrude?

early 60's 6hp
late 70's 70hp
reliable
easy to work on, parts readily available & not too expensive
couldn't be happier

maybe your regret is due to boat shows & new boat dealers are nothing but mercs and yammies far as the eye can see.........that's a recent development and all about marketing; no reflection on the quality of the motor you just bought.

Re: Happy with your evinrude?

Im very pleased with mine. My motor is similar to the one you will be getting. Mine is a 1991 60HP Johnson. I got it over a year ago, and as many on this forum could attest to...I have learned a lot and become to love this motor.

I got the motor from someone who didn't take much care of it, but it still ran, and actually ran pretty good considering how worn out and abused it was from lack of maintence over the years.

Now I'm doing a full rebuild that really isn't all that pricey in comparison to some that rebuild mercury's or other brands...and I'm thinking this motor will now last a long long time running really well..

I love my J/E's also but you are on a J/E board so what kind of answers did you expect? :) Post the same question on the Merc board and see what they say :) I'd be interested also!

Re: Happy with your evinrude?

Maybe the people that do not like them are the ones that have seen the rudes and johny time after time season after season still running strong, consistently providing reliable service:)

Good engines, but like all engines they will require proper maintenance, and you are on the right forum to ask and recieve correct answers on how to maintain and repair them

I've got 2 rudes 1 johnnie. Love 'em all. Had 2 Merc's previously and really
didn't like them. They were not as reliable and that is what we're all looking for. Botton line;) With proper maintenence you will not regret the purchase.
The BIG plus is the knowledge and willingness of the experts here.Priceless!

Re: Happy with your evinrude?

I have to agree with everyone else. Love my OMC's. I think my father has six OMC's, ranging from a '62 3hp up to a '93 120hp, all very dependable and pretty simple to work on.
They're damn near indestructible.
All you really need to do to keep them running indefinitely is:
Use the proper fuel/oil mix.
Change L/U oil and water pump regularly.
And winterize them for winter storage.

I say excellent purchase, you should be very happy, those two stroke 50's will really go:D
