Hard Cold Start 5.7L

1985, Merc. 5.7L 4BBl carb, New dist. cap. rotor, new coil, new plugs, new wires, rebuilt carb. cleaned all - and + wire connections. New fuel filter, checked for fuel blockage in lines from fuel tank and connections tank check valve.
Problem just began, cold start, pump throttle once or twice back to neutral engine will not fire, crank and crank for long time then will fire on one then two and begin to start. when engine has started for rest of day will fire with two turns starts great??? Next day cold start then crank crank crank.

Two things to check....

Make sure that your choke is closing when you pump the throttle.
Make sure you see fuel squirting from the venturis down to the throttle plates (need an assistant for this).

You need to give it 1/4 to 1/2 throttle while cranking, not just back to neutral.

could not see the tree for the forest, choke link came off retain clip came off link fell out.
