97 mercruiser 5.7 260 horsepower v8, 2bbl mercarb.

So, I rebuilt this carburetor after having warm start problems. I got it out on the water this weekend, and it seems much better it fired up every time , even after using it for extended period Of time. However I spent the night on the lake, in the morning when I woke up (the boat, completely cold obviously)fired right up with one second turn of the key (no priming or high neutral) . It idled very low for about 10 seconds , stumbled and eventually stalled. Then it would not start back up , it just cranked and cranked. At this point, I put it into high neutral and primed it as I would typically for a cold start... that was completely ineffective and still just cranked. So I removed the flame arrestor and opened the choke up thinking maybe I flooded it in the process of trying to get it started . Once I had the flame arrestor off, i force opened the choke , and propped it open. It fired up after about 5 or 6 seconds of cranking. I was really happy with the rebuild until I encountered this cold start problem, which was very similar to my original problem. Only before (my original problem) it would happen with the engine warm. Now it seems to only happen when it's cold. I have been battling with this season lol, and this is the best it's gotten so I'm not entirely upset, I can live with the hard cold start, but I'd like to know what is going on. Any help will be appreciated.

Oh and by the way it starts fine on the muffs cold. But in the water, it would not .

adjust your choke

That is what I was thinking, but it appears to be working properly. It should be closed when cold, then open when warm right? It's an electric choke. I was thinking about adjusting the choke to where it's never closes completely, is that a bad idea?

Your choke should never close completely, it should always have at least a 1/8 gap on the top. I adjust mine to full open, and just have to let it run at higher rpm the first thing in the morning

What kind of shape is your ignition system in? Do you have a nice blue (hot) spark? A cheap spark gap tester can help.

Well, I just replaced all the spark plug wires , distributor cap and spark plugs this offseason. I figured it would be good. However if I can't figure out if my carburetor is the prob I would think it's an ignition problem. It's a thunderbolt V ignition

Sounds to me like your motor just needs more air and less gas
