im have a 1990 150 gt johnson.it is getting really hard to start after sitting a few weeks. Plenty of battery and seems to restart fine if you don't sit to long. The manual i have doesnt cover much on the primer choke. By the way it's a key push choke. Any hints on fixintg would be great thx

Re: hard cold start

sure.. i'm a bass fisherman in fl. and the last few months i'm having a real hard time starting the motor when its ice cold. Befroe I start i make sure the bulb is pumped and i hear the gas fill the bulbs. then i push the key 10x the get the prime going. I played this game for 20 min last week at the ramp. I starts fine when its warm, it's just that cold start in the morning.. what do you think?

Next time you try it,pump the primer, crank the key,AND push in at the same time. Then get back to us.

Thanks,

DHP

Also try holding the key in for about 10 seconds before turning to start, rather than bumping it 10X, then to turn the key to start with the key pushed in, as DHP posted. Are you sure that your primer is still working, can you hear it click? Might want to try taking the cover off at the ramp and turning the primer manually, and see if it starts easier like that.

Re: hard cold start

I can't wait either to go boating & camping again. Thanks guys I just read this forum on the cold starts and I have been cranking my boat wrong myself. I do everything except when I start my boat(88 Horsepower SPL evinrude 1989 model) I push my key in and let go before I crank/start it. Then I bump it every once in a while while she is warming up to keep her going, then off I go. No wonder why I have a little bit of a hard time starting it. I will try that myself when I crank her for the first time of the day.

Re: hard cold start

this is how i start my 1990 115 evi

-have fresch gas/mixture
-full battery

- sqeeze bulp till hard
- turn key for signal
- push in key 5 to 8 sec
- keep key pushed in and turn to start
- when engine fires stop pushing in
- may be you need to push key in (prime) some if it sound like stalling not long just a half second should do it.
you dont have to use the warm op lever usualy. this way.
you dont want to rev up a cold motor with the warm up lever.

let it warm up for 5 to 10 minutes and put it firm in gear. and your good to go.

good luck
