Re: hard cold start

Is the choke closed when first trying to start. Pump the throttle and see if any fuel squirts. Not sure if 84's had electric chokes, but they have constant 12v, I believe.

Re: hard cold start

The choke is powered thru the switched power wire (purple) which has 12V when the key is in the run position. It does not have power when the key is switched off.

...Okay, let me try.

Next time you prepare to start with a cold engine (and before you even put the key in the switch):

Open the doghouse and remove the flame arrestor.
Have an assistant pump the throttle at least twice in neutral while you observe the carb. You are looking for two things that should happen in the blink of an eye: (1) fuel squirting from the accelerator nozzles into the carb's throat and (2) the choke butterfly snapping CLOSED.
If either or both actions do not happen the engine will be next to impossible to start from cold (but would more than likely re-fire if the engine was warm).
And, be advised, the longer you leave the key in the run position during starting attempts, the weaker the choking action will be.

This REALLY should be a new thread!!!!!

"would a 6hp outboard push a 20ft " ....sure it would, just not very fast and not very far on that can of pre-mix you'll be toting along.
If the purpose of the 6hp would be for slow speed trolling......go for it. If secondary/emergency propulsion is the object, better find somemore ponies.
