I have not adjusted anything as far as shifting on my motor since I owned it but this year when I put it in the water fwd seems to rev up real high before it will catch into gear, reverse seems fine. Could a cable have moved or come loose? if so where would I look?
PS
I change the lower unit oil every year as well as the 2 washers. No I did not mess w/ the shift pivot screw

Re: Hard Shifting in foward

It would help to know the model and make of the motor. Chances are the gears are worn. Chryslers and Force have different types of adjustments. If gear and clutch are worn it may be possible to have them refaced at a machine shop. If replacments are needed you will need to post make and model. Typical price for both the gear and the clutch is around 300 for parts plus you may need a pro to shim them for you.

1987 125hp Force, Sometimes it will shift grom nuetral to foward nice and smoth sometimes it seems like the shifter has to be moved fwd more for it to catch thus raising rpms.

Re: Hard Shifting in foward

Sounds like the shift cable is binding somewhere.
Either in the control box, on the engine, or the cable jacket has split somewhere along its length.

Close inspection is the only way to find out.

Could maybe be salvaged with a through cleaning and lubricating of the cable.

You can try disconnecting the cable on the engine end.
Then try shifting the motor with your hand to see if there is resistance in the linkage on the motor.

Then try shifting the control handle, to see if the cable is binding somewhere along the way.
