I have a 2011 5.7 GIC 300P (A166359) with a DPS-A drive (A163587). The boat is a Regal 2300 with 74 hours. When we test drove it, it had a very distinct ?clunk? shifting into reverse, but going into forward it is velvet smooth. I had a Merc b3 drive on my last boat and you could not hear it shift in either direction. I have been told that VP?s are supposed to be smooth in both directions and others have said that is a ?normal? noise for that drive. The previous owner said it has done the clunking noise since it was new and even had the dealer look at it and was told that there was nothing wrong. I have read the manual (the version on boat info from this site) on shift cable install starting on page 185 and can?t seem to understand what the procedure writer is trying to explain. I understand that this is a from scratch, but there are several options with respect to mounting locations, push to close, and other adjustments. My goal is to go over the install procedure to make sure that there is not a adjustment out of whack. On page 189 there is mention of a ?throttle cable adjustment? and ?hard shifting from neutral? and I think that may be what the ?clunk? is. If anybody on here has a simplified version please share. Also if the servicing marina did not use the right drive oil could this cause and issue?

Are you still moving forward when you shift into reverse, you will hear a clunk because the props are still moving. Is that what is happening? What happens if you are not moving at all and you shift into reverse? Do you still hear the clunk?

We were sitting in the slip when I put it in reverse and it clunked and I did not slam it just pop it back like I would do my previous boat. Through out the day from backing off a beach to docking it would just clunk.
