Hard start at cold. Can choke be "adjusted?"

I've had a difficult time starting my engine this season(2000 130 2 stroke Yamaha). Once its started it runs, and restarts fine. Its the initial kick over thats a pain. Now I find that applying the choke after its warmed up(to see if it was working correctly) has no effect at all on the engines running. In the past, applying the choke after its warmed up would cause the engine to immediatly start dying out. Now, I applied the choke far at least 20 seconds (at the key, and at the engine itself) and the engine ran perfectly and didnt try to die out. So I now assume that my starting problems are somehow related to the choke. If I take of the silencer and see that the flaps arent closing all the way, is there anyway I can adjust them to close all the way?Are there any other problems that can cause this condition? I changed the plugs, filters, added all fresh gas, and the bulb is rock hard. Any help is appreciated.

with the airbox on hit the choke switch on the dash, you should hear a loud clack as the solinoid closes the shutters. watch the fwd linkages on both carbs to be sure they move. some of the older motors if the manual switch was pushed all the way in it would lock out the electric choke. first verify the linkage moves before removing the airbox.

Yes the choke is adjustable. There is a line scribed on the plunger to line up with the solinoid housing. First you need to follow Rodbolts instructions.

Thanks men. I will absolutly do exactly what rodbolt says. Unfortunatley, the weather hasnt been cooperative here in NYC so Im waiting for a break. One thing Im curious about until then is: Would the solinoid setting also effect the manual choke at the engine itself? I tried both and got the same results.

It should be independent. This is why Rodbolt suggested a visual inspection of what is happening when you activate the choke either way.

Ray and Rodbolt. Thanks again for your time and input. I finally had a break in the weather and looked over the choke setting. What I found: The choke solenoid was placed too low on the airbox, thus not allowing the the "butterfly's" to close completely. It may have slid down on its own from a few years of vibration, or I didnt put it back correctly the last time I had it off. Either way, I adjusted its height and she started up in under 2 seconds. Thanks again for your input and time. You are truly generous, selfless men who help out many in need. Please accept my heart felt THANKS!.........again. Pat
