My 1991 3.0 L mercruiser starts fine and runs great EXCEPT when I'm on the lake and I shut it down to let the kids swim for a while (maybe 30 or 40 minutes) it has a hard time restarting. I have to push the throttle foward and it will eventually start. It's been tuned up new wires plugs, rebuilt carb, everything but the fuel pump. That was tested with the fuel line disconnected and it fills a gallon jug very fast when the engine is turning over. Any ideas as to what the problem is? It gets a little scary.

Re: Hard start

Thats a standard feature of MerCarbs at no extra charge! That period of shut down is called "hot soak" and all carbed engines do it to some degree, the MerCarbs just happen to be one of the worst. It causes no problems and don't hesitate to use full throttle to sart it.

Re: Hard start

I have, or should say had that same problem (1989 4.3 w/Mercarb) even after having the carb rebuilt. Well, come to find out, I had low compression in one cyl. After having the heads done, compression is great and that starting problem after warm up is almost non existant. Try checking your compression.

yep, p.o.s. mercarb + 10% ethanol in gas = heatsoak/boiling gas = flooded engine.

have to start my 5.7 mercruiser same way after sking or cruising.
Hold throttle only button in, move to full throttle and pull back as soon as it starts.
