I have a 2002, 60HP merc which I am having trouble with starting at times. When the engine has been tilted awhile, and I go to start up, it seems that at times I have to crank it many times before it starts. After it starts it runs good. I am considering rebuilding all the carbs and also the fuel pump. Does anybody have any input as if I am heading in the right direction, or any other direction I should be considering. I would appreciate any input. P.s. I have not done any maintenance on it since it was bought new in 2002. Thanks

Are you pumping the bulb till it's hard before trying to start

question Bob, Will pumping the bulb in the tilt position flood the engine? I don't know that that is what he is doing. My 60hp seems to need extra gas, and I sometimes pump it a couple of times in the tilt and it starts better.

I'm thinking one of two things.
Dirty plugs or
bad choke

Make sure you're choke is working right. I've seen the fuel lines on the newer chokes collapse and not allow the extra fuel to pump to the cylinders.

Hope this helps!

There is no choke on this engine -- it's a primer system. With the engine tilted up, fuel can drain from the float bowl. Tilt the engine down, raise the fast idle lever a little, trurn the key to start. If it doesn't start push in on the key to give it a little shot of fuel.
