Re: Hard starting cold

Try holding the ignition key in while you crank the engine, if the primer solenoid is functioning properly, it will enrich the fuel/air mix and make cold starting easier.

Re: Hard starting cold

A simple test for the primer solenoid, is to turn the key to the accessory position and push it in. If the solenoid clicks, then you know it is getting power. If you get the click and to test if the solenoid is working properly, pull off one of the hoses that leads from the primer solenoid to the carburetor. Then squeeze the primer bulb until it is hard and repeat the procedure above. You should get a pretty good squirt out the hose. If you get the fuel squirt, then you could have an obstruction in one of the little brass nipples where the primer hose connects to the solenoid. I have cleared those by getting a fine copper or brass wire and sticking it through the nipple. If you don't get the fuel squirt, you could try disassembling the solenoid. There is a screen inside that could be clogged. Take it apart slowly and remember where all the springs and plungers go.
