Hard starting??

Ok, so I've posted on here previously about having problems with my motor but I think that it just needed to be run a bit and part of the problem was user error by me being a new boat owner with no previous experience. I have a 1986 150hp Mercury XR2 S/N #0B122909 and I've gotten the information on it before. The motor was redone in 2005 and I'm thinking that it was done to be like an XR4 if that's possible but the cowling is an XR4 partly.

I have a problem getting the engine started for the first time of the day but after the first start it usually starts right up with a slight turn of the key. On the first start, I pump the prim bulb until it gets hard, turn the key slightly, push in for the enricher to give some fuel then turn the key to engage the starter. I only hold down on the choke for 2-4 seconds before I lay off and just continue cranking. How many 5-10 second cycles of cranking should it take before it actually starts? This is a new boat to me and I've had to use a fuel/oil mix to get it started every time. When I try to choke/enrich it more without spraying the mix into the carbs then it doesn't start and i check the plugs which are usually wet. Once the motor starts up it seems to run well with a max speed of ~36mph according to gps and 4600rpm according to the tach, which I think is off a bit.

What is proper starting procedure and how long should it take cranking it to get it started?? I don't want to ruin anything by 'over cranking' it to cause me more problems  I've read the posts on starting engines here but I've tried it and doesn't seem to help much. I do have the throttle lever with the push button in the center to keep the prop in neutral while enabling to forward throttle.

Re: Hard starting??

Sounds like you need to make sure the enrichener is working.

You should choke the motor, while cranking until she fires, and that should be 10-15 sec of cranking, not more.

You want to hold the key down(choke) the entire time for that 10-15 seconds? How long can it take before the engine floods? And in the case of flooding, what do you do to clear it if you are on the water? Wait a bit?

Don't worrk about flooding the engine. That almost never happens. Yes, hold the key in the whole time cranking, when coldstarting

Re: Hard starting??

So if it doesn't start on the first 10-15 seconds of cranking with the choke pushed in on the key then how many times should you continue cranking with the choke in? Guess I'm too paranoid about ruining something at this point in time, but I just need to figure out how to get this motor started right the first time. I will be checking out the enricher either tonight or tomorrow as well. It needs to allow free flow, "gravity fed" fuel through the bottom valve when the choke is pushed in on the key correct?
