my 88 70hp is having trouble starting after it has been sitting for a while. after you get it to run, runs great and if you don't leave it for to long it fires right up any ideas?

Re: hard starts

by "to long", do you mean couple years or a couple weeks, a day or two, or hours, or 30 minutes?

Re: hard starts

Couple of hrs on the wait time.

Cleaned carbs, decarbed eng, set linkage as said before it runs great after you get it started the first time.

Starting
At first I did not pump the ball never had to on my 73 Johnson 25hp
Push the key in and turn the key.

Then I found that the ball was very soft so I pumped it pushed in the key and turned it. Would take a few tries alternating turning the key while pushing in and not pushing in ant it would start.

Should the ball go soft? I'm used to the 25 where you just bump the key and it starts is this not the case with the higher hp engs?

Re: hard starts

after they sit a couple of hours, pump the bulb till hard. fast idle lever all the way up, turn key to on, push in count to 3 and turn key, still holding, release key. should have started, lower fast idle lever to idle. you may have to bump the key in once or twice till the motor settles. you have a primer on that motor, that injects fuel into the intake, when you push the key in. motor does not have a choke, like the 25.
